Skift Hospitality has an annual summit, and much of what was discussed this year had to do with opportunities for growth and recovery in the wake of the pandemic. Here are the big takeaways:
- Labor shortages are taking their toll – travelers are coming back to the hospitality industry, but layoffs during the pandemic are now leading to a shortage of well-trained staff. If your hotel had to lay off workers, now is the time to train new team members so that they are ready to welcome back the next wave of travelers.
- Investors are waiting to see something happen – with the worst economic downturn the industry has ever seen, you would have expected major deals to be taking place and losses being cut. However, many governments have pumped funds into the hospitality industry to keep it alive. Thus, even though investment funds were formed for this very purpose during the pandemic, things have been relatively quiet.
- Experience is the best salesperson – it’s no longer just about brand names, a fitness center, or a spa at your hotel. Travelers are now looking for a complete experience.
- What does autumn hold? – travel ramps up during summer. It even did last year. But with the Delta variant spreading rapidly, all eyes are on the fall season to see if the hospitality industry is really going to recover this year.
