Homeland Security Extends Travel Restrictions to Canada and Mexico

Citing the Delta variant as the catalyst, the US Department of Homeland Security has once again extended the travel restrictions between the US and both Canada and Mexico until at least August 21. Under this restriction, non-essential travel should be avoided between the US and the other nations on the North American Continent.

This determination has been imposed, despite the fact that Canada has said it will open its borders to US tourists, starting on August 9. The Canadian lifting of restrictions for US tourists is limited to those who are fully vaccinated (two weeks after taking their final shot).

In the meantime, the US is working with European dignitaries to lift travel restrictions in popular tourist locations overseas. Italy is already allowing US tourists to visit as long as they travel using specific airports in the US and Italy and can either show proof of being fully vaccinated or proof of a negative test both within a certain number of hours of landing in Italy and again within a certain number of hours after landing.

The Delta variant is clearly continuing to impact the international travel industry. Hoteliers need to capitalize on local vacationers to make up for the lack of international travel.
